The Reason Behind My Move from Pop to Cultural Music, Kcee Explained

Renowned Nigerian artist, Kingsley Okonkwo, also known as Kcee, has disclosed his shift from pop music to cultural melodies, driven by his desire to spotlight the rich Igbo heritage on a global stage.

The 44-year-old musician, currently riding high on the success of his cultural-themed hit track, ‘Ojapiano‘, shared that the inspiration to delve into cultural music struck him in 2018. Since then, he has been honing his artistic skills to bring his vision to life.

In a recent conversation with Channels TV, he revealed,

“It didn’t just come. I was working towards it for a couple of years about four/five years.

“Since 2018, I started thinking about how can I take the culture to the world. That was when I started doing cultural music. For those that know my career, I wasn’t doing cultural music before. But I have it in me. So, at some point, I discovered the sweetness of the cultural side. And I decided how can I add the pop I’m doing into the culture and take it global. So, it has been a process, I did a couple of cultural songs, cultural praise then I found myself here.”

Kcee said that when he first moved to cultural music, a lot of people had doubts about him, but he is happy that it worked out.
